The best doctors in Moscow were arrested by Joseph Stalin in 1953, accused of being a part of a conspiracy to assassinate top Communist officials. The case became known as the "Doctors' Plot," and is often considered to be one of the worst instances of mass murder in the history of the Soviet Union.

The Soviets' antisemitic campaign reached its climax in the Doctors' Plot, when six Jewish doctors were suspected of planning to kill senior Communist Party leaders. The plot was a fabrication and was dropped shortly after Stalin's death.

The doctors were forced into prison, and many died in the process. The most famous of them was neurosurgeon Dmitry Dzukaev, who saved Alexander Marshal when he was diagnosed with spinal hernia. The Central Intelligence Agency, meanwhile, released a report on the incident in April 1953. It stated that there were no proofs to back up the claims.

But that didn't stop Joseph Stalin from pursuing his political ambitions. He also developed paranoia, and started killing random people, such as his former aide, Lazar Kaganovich.

In order to save Stalin, Khrushchev would have to send the best doctors in Moscow. However, he realized that all the committee members were implicated in the poisoning of Stalin, so he decided to get regular medics from the streets of Moscow to serve as a substitute.

The Russian government, meanwhile, was eager to respond to the US and UK's demands for help in the war against Germany. After Stalin's death, the new Soviet leadership said that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the Doctors' Plot had happened.

Elena Gogoleva, a former actress, was a member of the Maly Academic Theatre in Moscow. She made a stage debut in 1918, and stayed on the troupe for over fifteen years. In 1920, she married actor Vsevolod Aksyonov and gave birth to their son, Igor. In 1941, she made a comeback, but she passed away the following year. Her funeral was held in Vagankovskoe Cemetery in Moscow, next to her son's tomb.

Elena Gogoleva was a three-time State Prize of the USSR winner and a People's Artist of Russia. She was also known for riding horses in Moscow, and she was considered a great actress. She also performed in more than 150 roles on the stage at the Maly Academic Theatre.

After the Doctors' Plot, a number of Soviet actors had their careers hampered. Their performances were often compensated with food instead of money. A few of them even had to leave the country. Others, including Maria Ermolova, were unable to get jobs at all, as their names were smeared in the newspapers as the result of the antisemitic campaign.

But a few of the doctors were fortunate enough to survive the Doctors' Plot. They included Professor Yakov Rapoport, who is still alive today, and Maria Ivanovna, a true ascetic who healed patients with lampada oil. In the 1930s, the clinic of Elena Gogoleva was the largest in Moscow, treating more than ten thousand patients. She also tonsured 17 sisters, and trained women to be hardworking nurses.
